BIRTHDAY UP IN FLAMES

Flame is the largest annual conference of the European gas industry, and the likes of Shell, ExxonMobil, Fluxys, BP and others meet there to push their plans for continued gas expansion.

The Gastivists joined with Dutch climate justice group Code Rood to call out the devastating impact that gas drilling and transportation has on local communities and the climate. After a weekend of online adhacking and social media storms, activists entered the hotel where the conference was being held and disrupted the conference. They were then forcibly ejected by heavy-handed security and one person was arrested. 

 

Birthday up in Flames: Gas industry conference disrupted to denounce impact on communities and climate    

This morning, several groups of climate protectors disrupted the 25th birthday edition of Flame, Europe’s largest annual gas industry conference. Corporations such as Shell and ExxonMobil have been meeting yearly at Flame to push new fossil gas projects. Protestors entered the Okura hotel in Amsterdam, where Flame is being held, and disrupted the conference before being forcibly removed along with journalists. Speeches and protest continued in front of the hotel while another demonstration is called for this evening.

Camille, a climate protector participating in the action, declared in front of Flame “This is a crime scene. Here, fossil fuel criminals gather to invest in the destruction of communities and the climate. They call gas a transition fuel. It is not. Gas is a fossil fuel and it kills. Today, you celebrate 25 years of burning down the earth with your flame conferences, while the rest of us are mourning. The so-called ‘natural’ gas that you speak of is causing so called ‘natural’ disasters.”

The actions, which followed adhacking over the weekend and an online storm yesterday, were supported by Dutch climate justice group Code Rood and the Gastivists network. They called out the devastating impact that gas drilling and transportation has on local communities and the climate. They demanded an end to all fossil fuels and for the corporations responsible to pay for the damage they have caused.

“Flame is where the biggest gas corporations like Shell and ExxonMobil gather to network, lobby politicians, sign more gas contracts and lock us into decades of fossil fuels. This spells disaster not only for our climate but also communities from Gronignen to Mozambique that are being sacrificed at the alter of gas industry profits. These climate criminals have been extracting profits from areas in the global South where they think they can ignore environmental and human rights and keep all the profits for themselves. 25 years is 25 too many, and we’re here to say enough is enough. Their fossil fuelled party is officially over.” Said Floris, another climate protector    The three-day event aims to promote fossil gas as a low-carbon transition fuel towards a renewable future. However, research shows gas can be as bad for the climate as coal, if not worse. Despite this, billions in public money are being given to new gas infrastructure which makes it even harder to move away from dirty energy. The EU’s public banks have given two billion euros to build the Transadriatic Pipeline (TAP) bringing Azeri gas to Italy.

“Shell and its cohorts claim gas is a fuel of the future but already today it’s responsible for cyclones like Idai and Kenneth that devastated Mozambique. Keeping us locked into a fossil fuelled system of climate violence is only going to make these more frequent and deadly. Our governments know this, yet continue pumping public money into destructive gas projects. We demand that public money goes into renewables and reparations instead.” Said Charli, climate protector.

The high number and heavy reaction of security, which saw one person arrested and journalists ejected, shows how desperate the gas industry is to keep its dirty business dealings a secret and away from the public gaze.
Inside the conference, a senior industry executive declared gas was not a climate solution. Andree Stracke, Chief Commercial Officer at German coal and gas utility RWE, said “Coal, oil and gas are all the same, they are all high carbon emitters.” He continued, “industry is underestimating the pressure and the will of the people to switch to renewables”.

Further protests have been announced for this evening outside the venue of the official 25th Birthday celebration of Flame in central Amsterdam.

VERJAARDAG GAAT IN VLAMMEN OP: 25e Flame gasindustrie conferentie in Amsterdam door verschillende groepen verstoord om de impact op gemeenschappen en het klimaat aan de kaak te stellen
Vannochtend hebben klimaatbeschermers de 25ste editie van Flame, de grootste jaarlijkse conferentie van de gasindustrie in Europa, verstoord. Bedrijven zoals Shell en ExxonMobil komen op Flame al 25 jaar bijeen om nieuwe gasprojecten verder te ontwikkelen. Het lukte verschillende groepen om het Okura hotel, de host van Flame, binnen te komen en de conferentie te verstoren, voor dat zij hardhandig werden verwijderd van het terein. Één persoon is gearresteerd en verschillende journalisten werden eveneens uit het hotel verwijderd.

Camille, een klimaatbeschermer die aan de actie deelnam: “Dit is een plaats delict. Hier komen fossiele brandstof criminelen samen om te investeren in de destructie van gemeenschappen en het klimaat. Ze noemen gas een transitie brandstof, dat is het niet. Gas is een fossiele brandstof en is vernietigend. Vandaag wordt met de viering van 25 jaar Flame conferenties het in brand zetten van de aarde gevierd, terwijl de rest van ons rouwt. Het zogenaamde ‘natural’ gas waar jullie het over hebben veroorzaakt ‘natural’ disasters.” 

De acties, die volgden op een weekend van adhacking (het overnemen van advertentie borden) en een online storm gefocused op Flame’s online aanwezigheid, werden ondersteund door het Nederlandse Code Rood en het internationale Gastivists netwerk. In de acties werd er aandacht gevraagd voor de verwoestende impact die gasboringen en gastransport hebben op lokale gemeenschappen en het klimaat. De klimaatberschermers eisten een einde aan het gebruik van alle fossiele brandstoffen en staan er op dat de verantwoordelijke bedrijven betalen voor de schade die zij aan hebben gericht.

“Flame is waar de grootste gasbedrijven zoals Shell en ExxonMobil samenkomen om te netwerken, te lobbyen, nog meer gascontracten te tekenen en ons allen voor decennia afhankelijk te houden aan fossiele brandstoffen. Dit heeft niet alleen catastrofale gevolgen voor het klimaat, maar ook voor gemeenschappen van Groningen tot Mozambique, die op het altaar van de gasindustrie worden geofferd. Deze klimaatcriminelen hebben winst gemaakt uit gebieden in het globale zuiden, waarbij ze denken dat ze milieu- en mensenrechten kunnen worden genegeerd en alle winst in eigen zak gestoken kan worden. 25 jaar is 25 jaar te veel, en we zijn hier om genoeg is genoeg te zeggen. Hun fossiele brandstoffen feestje is officieel voorbij!,” zei Floris, een andere klimaatbeschermer.

Het driedaagse evenement probeert fossiele gas te promoten als een koolstofarme transitie brandstof op weg naar een duurzame toekomst. Echter laat onderzoek zien dat gas even slecht voor het klimaat is als steenkool, als het niet al erger is. Ondanks dit onderzoek worden er miljarden aan publiek geld in nieuwe gasinfrastructuren gepompt, wat het alleen nog maar moeilijker maakt om deze vernietigende energie achter te laten. Zo hebben de banken van de EU twee miljard euro gestoken in de aanleg van de Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP), waarmee Azerbeidjaans gas naar Italië wordt gebracht.

“Shell claimt dat gas een brandstof voor de toekomst is, maar het is nu al verantwoordelijk voor cyclonen zoals Idai en Kenneth die Mozambique hebben verwoest. Als we vasthouden aan een fossiele brandstof system van klimaatgeweld zullen zulke rampen alleen maar vaker komen en dodelijker zijn. Onze regeringen weten dit, toch blijven ze publiek geld in deze destructieve gasprojecten pompen. Wij eisen dat publiek geld in duurzame energie en schadeherstel gestoken wordt,” zei klimaatbeschermer Charli.
Het grote aantal en de hevige ractie van de beveiliging, die één persoon gearresteerd zagen worden en journalisten verwijderden, laten zien hoe wanhopig de gas industrie is om haar gure zaken geheim te houden, ver van het publieke oog.

Een senior industrie bestuurslid verklaarde zelfs tijdens de conferentie zelf dat gas niet een oplossing is voor het klimaat probleem. Andree Stracke, Hoofd Marketing van het Duitse kool en gas bedrijf RWE zei: “Steenkool, olie en gas zijn allemaal hetzelfde, het zijn allemaal grote koolstof uitstoters.” Gevolgd door: “de industrie onderschat de druk en de wilskracht van het volk om de transitie te maken naar hernieuwbare energiebronnen.”
Verdere protesten zijn aangekondigd voor deze avond buiten de locatie van de officiële viering van de 25e verjaardag van Flame in het centrum van Amsterdam.
